World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum to present "Honoring the Legacy: A Tribute to African Americans in Golf"
The World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum has begun creative development on “Honoring the Legacy: A Tribute to African Americans in Golf” – a new, permanent exhibition that will recognize the triumphs and contributions of African Americans in the game. With the generous support of The PGA of America, the PGA TOUR and the USGA, the exhibition is expected to open in late spring 2014.
The exhibition will detail the long, rich history of African Americans in golf, from the difficult beginnings in the late 1800s for pioneers such as John Shippen, to the progress and challenges of today. The exhibition will also highlight the struggles and successes of notable golfers like World Golf Hall of Fame member Charlie Sifford during the Civil Rights era and major personalities such as Althea Gibson, Joe Louis and Tiger Woods.
Best-selling author Pete McDaniel will serve as the lead writer on the project. McDaniel is the author of the acclaimed book “Uneven Lies: The Heroic Story of African Americans in Golf’’ and co-wrote and co-produced the documentary “Uneven Fairways.” He is a member of both the African American Golfers Hall of Fame and National Black Golf Hall of Fame.
In addition, artist Mario Chiodo, renowned for his compelling sculptures based on history and social justice, will be bringing to life pivotal moments of African-Americans in golf. Chiodo has created monuments around the country, including the Harriet Tubman/Thomas Garrett Memorial in Wilmington, Del., the Contrabands Freedman's Memorial in Alexandria, Va., and "Remember Them: Champions for Humanity" in Oakland, Calif., the largest human rights monument in the Western United States.

Birmingham Traveling Civil Rights Exhibit Debuts at the Apollo
Birmingham Traveling
Civil Rights Exhibit Debuts at the Apollo
Mayor William Bell and the City of
Birmingham get ready to open the 2013 Civil
Rights Traveling Exhibit, Birmingham: The
Movement that Changed the World, in New York
City at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem .
“We are excited to continue
sharing Birmingham ’s story around the world. This stop
on the exhibit tour is especially significant because it represents the
opportunity to share our story to a new audience that may not realize that
without the events in Birmingham , there would not have been the
outcry to end segregation.” said Mayor Bell.
The Exhibit has been on display at
The King Center in Atlanta , the Capital Building in Washington
D.C. ; at the Edmund Pettus
Bridge in Selma , AL ; New Orleans , LA ; Memphis , TN ; Columbia , SC and
Jackson , MS . The exhibit made its way back to
Birmingham in
September in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the bombing of
16th
Street Baptist Church at the City’s highly successful
Empowerment Week events.
“I want to thank The Apollo
Theater for opening its doors to us and for continuing to embrace Dr. King’s
philosophy and strategy of nonviolence to eliminate racism. This is just the
beginning of our City embracing our past to build our future. We are excited to
share the history and show that Birmingham is 50 years forward,” said Mayor
Bell.
School children from Bronx
Community School 61 will be in attendance for the opening after hearing from
Mayor Bell earlier in the day speak on the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham and sharing a
chapter of the book, The Watsons Go to
Birmingham.
The exhibit will open on Monday,
November 25th at 7:00 p.m. with a special screening of the Hallmark
Channel’s The Watsons Go to
Birmingham movie. The event is free and open to the public. Walden Media, Wal-Mart
and Proctor and Gamble will provide free copies of the DVD to the first 100
people that arrive. Following the film will be a brief question and answer
session with screenwriter and filmmaker, Tonya Lee. The film tells the story of
a family from Flint , Michigan that travel to Birmingham , Alabama for a family visit during the summer
of 1963 and how the tragic bombing of 16th Street Baptist church and
death of the 4 little girls impacted their lives.
Apollo Theater
History
The neo-classical theater known
today as the Apollo Theater was designed by George Keister and first owned by
Sidney Cohen. In 1914, Benjamin Hurtig and Harry Seamon obtained a thirty-year
lease on the newly constructed theater calling it Hurtig and Seamon’s New
Burlesque Theater. Like many American theaters during this time,
African-Americans were not allowed to attend as patrons or to perform. Today,
the theater hosts many events throughout the year but is most famous for its
amateur night performances and the legendary acts that have graced its
stage.

AMERICAN CENTURY CHAMPIONSHIP DISTRIBUTES $85,000 TO TAHOE SOUTH NON-PROFITS
The 2013 American Century Championship (http://www.TahoeCelebrityGolf.com)
continues to benefit Tahoe South as the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (http://www.TahoeSouth.com) distributed
$85,000 to 28 non-profit groups through funds raised during the annual celebrity
golf tournament.
The announcement was made at
the organization’s Nov. 14 board meeting. The LTVA, in partnership with NBC
Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional
$60,000 through on-site volunteer efforts during tournament week to area high
schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe and others. Combined with
the latest non-profit distribution gifts, tournament sponsors have committed
more than $145,000 to Tahoe South based non-profits, agencies and
schools.
"The American Century
Championship happens once a year but it gives to the community every day in more
ways than one,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe
Visitors Authority. "Our long-term partnership with American Century and NBC
Sports is firmly rooted in our community. The event positively impacts the
destination through national marketing and media exposure. But just as
important, American Century and NBC lend their support to area organizations
that need the help.”
Tournament title sponsor
American Century Investments is a leading, privately-controlled investment
management firm serving professionals, institutions, corporations and
individuals. Through its ownership structure, more than 40 percent of company
profits support research to help find cures for genetically-based diseases
including cancer, diabetes and dementia.
Local cancer support programs
involving the Barton Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Cancer League received
$13,000. Tahoe Youth and Family Services and The Boys & Girls Club each
received $8,000 with $5,000 each to Christmas Cheer All Year and Live Violence
Free. Grants of $4,000 went to Bijou PTA, Kahle Community Center and Tahoe Arts
Project. Programs receiving $500 - $3,500 included Lake Tahoe Education
Foundation, Whittell Boosters, Assistance League, Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe,

County, Tahoe Community Food Pantry, South Tahoe High School Performing Arts
Booster Association, Carmel Senior Living/Kelly Ridge, Douglas County Sheriff's
Office Search and Rescue, El Dorado County Search and Rescue, Leadership Lake
Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Tahoe Douglas Rotary, Tahoe Magic Inc., Tahoe
Senior Plaza, and Lake Tahoe Shining Stars.
To be considered, local
organization had to meet 501(c)3 certified non-profit guidelines, provide an
outline of their mission, describe how the donation will be used and indicate
impact in the community.
Since 2009, more than 80
checks have been cut to local non-profits with donations totaling $630,000. In
addition to the local efforts, American Century Investments distributed $30,000
among three national cancer organizations.
The tournament has donated
over $4.2 million to local and national non-profits since its inception in 1990.
The 24 years of memories with sports and entertainment superstars have made the
American Century Championship network television’s longest running celebrity
golf tournament. Charles Barkley, Olympic Olympics Gold Medal great Michael
Phelps, Ray Romano, Larry the Cable Guy, John Elway and Jerry Rice were among
more than 80 sports and entertainment stars and Hall of Famers who competed in
the 54-hole, $600,000 tournament televised on NBC Sports in

The PGA of America and NBC Sports Group Reach Historic Agreement
PALM BEACH
GARDENS, Fla. – In an unprecedented agreement, The PGA of America and NBC Sports
Group today unveiled a historic partnership to further raise the profile of the
Ryder Cup, the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, and PGA
Professionals across the networks of NBC and Golf Channel beginning in 2015. The
partnership, which extends through 2030, and includes eight additional Ryder
Cups on NBC, was announced today by PGA of America President Ted Bishop and CEO
Pete Bevacqua, and NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus. The agreement also
includes all-language and simultaneous streaming rights for NBC’s Ryder Cup
coverage.
The Ryder Cup, one
of the most prestigious events in all of sports, has been televised by NBC since
1991. In 2012, the Ryder Cup was
televised to nearly one-half billion households globally.
This agreement
features a wave of new programming and special coverage of the Ryder Cup
including: regular Ryder Cup preview shows, vignettes, features, reports and
points updates on NBC and Golf Channel; a Ryder Cup Documentary Series on both
networks; live coverage of practice rounds (for the first time ever) and the
Ryder Cup Captain Selection Show on Golf Channel; and new Ryder Cup highlight
programming on Telemundo and Mun2 to expand Hispanic viewership
opportunities.
With this
agreement, the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid will also
continue to air live on
Golf Channel
(weekday coverage) and NBC (weekend coverage) through 2030. Additionally, Golf
Channel will continue live coverage of all four rounds of the PGA Professional
National Championship.
The relationship
between The PGA of America and NBC Sports Group expands a powerful partnership
that is designed to grow the game of golf and celebrate the PGA Professional
by:
•
Expanding the
relationship of the Ryder Cup beyond the week of the biennial
event
•
Growing
participation in the game of golf, especially with new golfers (both adult and
youth)
•
Elevating the
stature of PGA Professionals in their leadership role of growing the game
This agreement
will showcase the important role that PGA Professionals serve in instruction,
equipment selection and Rules knowledge, all of which will benefit golf fans and
golfers. New instructional programming and original series will be developed in
conjunction with the PGA of America featuring PGA Professionals. Host PGA
Professionals also will be featured during Golf Channel’s weekly coverage of PGA
Tour, Champions Tour and LPGA Tour events.
“In many ways,
this is a transformational deal for The PGA of America,” said Bevacqua. “We are
not only excited about the continued excellent coverage and treatment of the
Ryder Cup, Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid and other PGA of
America events by the NBC Sports Group, but we are eager to work with the
networks of NBC, including Golf Channel, on celebrating the unique role of the
PGA Professional in the game. Golf Channel is the daily voice of golf in this
country. There are wonderful synergies that will be explored between that voice
and The PGA of America, as we work together to honor PGA Professionals, draw
upon their expertise and expand their relevance among those who already play the
game and those who aspire to play.”
Programming will
also be designed to promote growth-of-the-game initiatives, such as Get Golf
Ready, where a PGA Professional will appear on a regular basis on Golf Channel
and NBC’s regional sports networks, offering advice on how beginning golfers can
experience the game in a variety of ways.
“We’re excited to
continue our longstanding relationship with The PGA of America and renew the
Ryder Cup, one of the most prestigious properties in sports, through 2030,” said
Lazarus. “This multi-platform agreement allows our broadcast, cable, digital and
regional platforms to work with The PGA on their prestigious events and
important initiatives.”
The PGA of America
has partnered with Golf Channel since the network’s founding in 1995, to promote
the expertise of PGA Professionals, including shows featuring top PGA
instructors, such as Michael Breed and Martin Hall. This expanded agreement
provides an avenue for Golf Channel to extend its reach through innovative new
programming and events.
The partnership
also will include a series of historical highlights of The PGA of America, which
will be produced
in conjunction
with The PGA’s Centennial Celebration in 2016.
The PGA of America
was advised by Evolution Media Capital, a leading sports and media investment
bank.

How Can We Grow The Game Of Golf?
The National Golf Foundation has a new idea for growing the game, one that has a familiar ring to it. The trade group is encouraging our industry to tap “latent” demand – that is, people who have some desire to play golf but haven’t yet acted on the impulse. There are something like 25 million Americans who are either “very” or “somewhat” interested in giving the game a try, the NGF has determined, a number large enough that even a 20 percent slice of it would have a salutary effect on our fiscal health. “They are fresh, optimistic prospects who, if welcomed to the game properly, can become committed golfers on some level,” the NGF believes. The trouble is, golf has never had a problem finding qualified prospects. Our problem is the “welcoming” part, especially as it applies to women and minorities. That’s the one we need to solve.

Property Wire reports that a Chinese-funded venture “is expected to be approved by the end of this year,” while groups based in Spain, Russia and Vietnam are also trying to hammer out Cuban development agreements. Not all of the proposals will make the cut, of course, but it’s evident Cuba is interested in tapping into the mega-Billion golf marketplace. Washington, D.C. --- Langston Golf Course will celebrate its recent induction into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame by hosting the Langston Heritage Celebration on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
